Conference Announcement

The SIC is delighted to announce that we have been invited by our colleagues from the Department of History of Science, Faculty of Letters, Istanbul University, for our symposium in 2016. ‘Instruments between East and West’ will be the conference theme.

‘Between East and West’ in this context might refer to ‘Orient and Occident’ or ‘Europe and the Ottoman Empire’, but also more broadly to other East-West relationships. This could include topics as diverse as Jesuits working in China or instruments in the Cold War - the possibilities are almost limitless. We will invite papers that focus on exchange and cooperation, conflict and competition, creation and use, interpretation, preservation and study of instruments and scientific heritage wherever possible adopting interdisciplinary perspectives.

The accompanying programme that our Istanbul colleagues are putting together will be hugely exciting. As before we are working very hard to keep the fees as low as possible, so this is definitely something to look forward to in 2016!

If you have never attended a symposium before be assured that the SIC is a very friendly and welcoming group with no formal membership. All are welcome!
